TASTED BY THE EDITOR - Dining at New Heights: My Unforgettable Experience at Dubrovnik's Dinner in the Sky

Written by  Aug 30, 2024

So over the past couple of decades of covering the restaurant scene in Dubrovnik I have been fortunate to visit some weird and wonderful eateries. From caves to islands, from Michelin star to family farms, and pretty much everything in between. I thought I had seen it all – I was wrong, so wrong! Dinner in the Sky in Dubrovnik is Croatia's first and only flying dinner table restaurant. Let me clarify that sentence a little. The restaurant, or rather dining experience, all takes place on a platform that rises 50 metres into the air. Yes, you eat in the sky, well I guess the clue was in the title. The platform, which was larger than I expected gives you a birds-eye view as you tuck into your dinner. And it's an even changing view as the platform slowly rotates.

So let's get down to the nuts and bolts of it. Was I a little apprehensive? Maybe a little. Excited? Absolutely. So I think it's important to emphasise the elephant in the room first, safety. It is all extremely professionally organised. You get a welcome drink and a talk through what the experience holds. Guest safety is a priority. The platform is designed according to the German DIN 4112 standard and manufactured in Belgium under the supervision of TÜV. Every detail is taken into account to ensure maximum guest safety. Did I feel safe? 100 percent.

So what do you actually eat in the sky?

So onto the food. You basically get a choice of three meals, meat, fish or veggie. Bear in mind that this isn't a standard restaurant so they need to do some forward planning. However, the restaurant does have a chef and waiters, in fact they felt like half kitchen staff and half animators. Great fun! I plumped for the meat menu. The starter was served at terra firma level and as the platform slowly rose into the sky I enjoyed Dalmatian prosciutto on goat cheese cream, grilled artichokes, grilled olives and marinated mushrooms. The wine flowed. And yes, the price of the wine (red or white) plus water is included in the overall price.

Main course was a whole new adventure. This is where the chef stepped up. I must say it was a little weird watching a chef spin a sauce as we all spun 50 metres over the ground. He prepared slow cooked veal, which was as tender as butter. Served with pave potatoes, purple cabbage and shallot cream, asparagus and hollandaise with demi-glace. The hollandaise sauce was the key, adding just that right amount of cream and zing to compliment the meat.

And finally dessert, and an apple strudel with vanilla sauce, crumbled caramelized almonds, again a gem. You do kind of lose track of time whilst hanging in the sky. The sunset was incredible as the sun slowly set behind the Elaphite islands. And the views over the Adriatic, the Dubrovnik Bridge and the whole city were stunning.

However, I think that this is one of those things that you have to try to and make your own opinions. Would I recommend it? For sure. Yes, I know there is a lot to take in (literally) but how many times in your life are you going to get the chance to eat a first-class meal whilst spinning through a 360 degrees' view of Dubrovnik, I'm guessing not very often. Try it, and you can thank me later.
