It is the most important meal of the day, and it is equally important to get it absolutely right. Finding a good breakfast, in fact a breakfast of any kind in Dubrovnik, can be quite a challenge. However, we have a solution - Gradska Kavana Arsenal Restaurant and Bar. To be fair it isn't so much an average breakfast, more like the perfect way to start your day. So let's start with the location. I am not sure if there is a better place in Europe to enjoy breakfast. Let me set the scene. You are sitting in the historic Old City of Dubrovnik looking out over the charming old harbour with a view of the Adriatic in the foreground and the green mountains in the background. It is like you have the best that both nature and history have to offer. This view is utterly priceless.
On the busy stone terrace, tucked away from the glare of the morning sunshine, I observe the menu. Something jumps out at me immediately, the Orlando breakfast. I am a lover of a big cooked breakfast, and basically Orlando is their version of an English breakfast. The pleasant waiter confirms my thoughts and within minutes' fresh rolls, jams, butter, freshly squeezed orange juice and coffee land on my table. If he had stopped bringing food there and then I would have been satisfied. But the best was coming.
Such an ideal place to start your day
Do yourselves a favour. If you are in the Old City of Dubrovnik of a morning and feel peckish go straight to Gradska Kavana Arsenal Restaurant and Bar and order an Orlando breakfast. There is, in my humble opinion, no better brekkie in the city. Sausages, eggs, toast, baked beans, mushrooms, tomatoes and bacon, it was enough to keep me going without having lunch. So sit in the shade with a gentle breeze from the Adriatic watching the ferries and galleons chugging in and out of the port whilst in total serenity.
It's like breakfast and a session of yoga at the same time, a truly Zen start to the day.
Now, I don't often mention the prices, but I feel I just have to. This is a high-end restaurant and I was half expecting the breakfast to cost an arm and a leg, how wrong I was. Not only was it reasonable, it actually bordered on being cheap. For what you get, the quality and sheer amount of food, combined with the extremely professional service I would say that it is by far the best value for breakfast in the whole city. And you get the view thrown in for free. Such an ideal place to start your Dubrovnik day before heading off to explore the rest of the city or go island-hopping. I can't rate this highly enough, just a perfect breakfast.
